I sink into a deep plié before rising into relevé on my right foot. At the same time, I lift my left foot to my right knee.

And spot! My eyes find my favorite corner of the room as I turn, my left foot flying behind me and my arms curved in front of me.

Ms. Alicia claps loudly. “We’re running a few minutes over, but let’s take a water break, run this from the top, and call it a day. So proud of you all!”

I guzzle my water, feeling strong and

confident. If I use this routine in my solo audition, I’m sure to impress Ms. Marianne.

But then I glance out the window that leads to the hallway. Brie is waiting for me, like she does after all team practices. Only this time, my stomach clenches. For the first time since we became friends three years ago, I don’t know what to say to her.
